Crown Lengthening

Remedy a Gummy Smile!

Dr. Amini can surgically expose more of the crown to fix a gummy smile. This is known as crown lengthening. He also uses this procedure to allow a cap to fully cover a damaged tooth.

Dr. Amini is a specialist in smile rehabilitation and highly skilled and experienced in oral surgery. He has performed many crown lengthening procedures.

Crown lengthening is a relatively simple procedure that only requires local anesthetic. Dr. Amini utilizes a state-of-the-art electrosurgical instrument, which operates efficiently and stops bleeding as it works. This means little to no post-treatment discomfort.

Fix a gummy smile

Cosmetic crown lengthening is an effective treatment for patients with gummy smiles. A “gummy smile” refers to a smile where the teeth look shorter than normal or where there is excessive gum tissue, making the teeth appear less prominent. Many people feel self-conscious about their gummy smile.

It may seem that the teeth are simply too short, but in fact part of each tooth is hidden beneath excess bone and gum tissue. Once the excess bone has been sculpted away, the gum can rest in its proper relationship to the teeth, exposing the full length of the crown.

Functional Crown Lengthening

Dr. Amini performs crown lengthening to allow access to tooth decay that is deep under the gums. He will create and fold back a flap, remove the decayed part of the tooth and then suture the gum back to the tooth at a lower level. This exposes more of the tooth thereby “lengthening” the crown (the part of the tooth above the gum line).

Crown lengthening is often performed to help crown restorations fit properly by ensuring there is enough supporting tooth structure. If the underlying tooth is too short, a crown can cause gum bleeding and pain, or it can fall off.
