Onlays and Inlays in Newport Beach
Durable, long-lasting tooth restorations
Dr. Amini offers high-quality, durable onlays and inlays to repair large cavities in a tooth. An inlay is placed in the grooves between the cusps (highest points) of a tooth, and an onlay is fitted over the cusps. Dr. Amini usually uses a strong tooth-colored porcelain, such as e.max porcelain.
An inlay or onlay is a more conservative, minimally alternative to a crown, which requires cutting down the tooth. They are also a more durable alternative to fillings for large cavities. If there is sufficient structure left in a tooth, Dr. Amini prefers this course of treatment rather than placing a crown.
With his training and experience as a prosthodontist, which is a specialist in restoring and replacing teeth, Dr. Amini creates high-quality, durable onlays and inlays. He uses a first-rate lab known for its high-quality craftsmanship.
More durable than fillings and more conservative than crowns
Dr. Amini uses tooth-colored fillings made of composite material to fill small cavities, but when the cavity is larger, there is more opportunity for the composite filling to fail due to shrinkage and biting forces compromising it. Onlays and inlays are more resistant to further decay, more precisely fitted and have greater durability.
Larger cavities (generally greater than 1/3 of the width of the tooth) require greater support. Typically crowns are used for these larger cavities, but Dr. Amini prefers to employ onlays and inlays, which require less tooth preparation. When the cavity is slightly larger he uses an inlay; when it is larger still and there is some damage to the cusps, he uses an onlay.
Onlays and Inlays procedure
Two appointments are required for onlays and inlays. During the first visit, Dr. Amini will remove the filling being replaced or prepare the damaged or decaying area of the tooth and take a precise impression.
Dr. Amini will then apply a sealant on your tooth as a temporary measure until your final restoration is ready. In the second visit, Dr. Amini will place the onlay or inlay and make sure the fit is just right.
